Memphis vs. Arizona NCAA Basketball Preview

Memphis Tigers

Memphis averages 72 points per game and a field goal percentage of 45%, winning 10 of 16 games in Conference USA. A good passing club to go with quality shooting, the Tigers can control tempo and dictate pace against almost any team. They have seven players who average seven points or more per game. Defensively, the Tigers can hold teams to low numbers, but the questions remain about the quality of their schedule.

Key players are Will Barton, Joe Jackson, Tarik Black as the top three scorers. Barton and Black lead the team in rebounding, each averaging five or more boards per game. Jackson and Chris Crawford set the pace in assists with three or more per game. Wesley Witherspoon and D.J. Stephens are the two best shooters from beyond the three point arc.

Memphis won big games against the University of Texas El Paso and University Alabama-Birmingham. They did not beat a top 25 team this year and have been defeated by Georgetown, Kansas, Eastern Carolina, Tulsa, and Marshall.

Arizona Wildcats

Arizona won the Pac-10 with a 14-4 league record and has the nation’s 25th best offense. They were only 5-6 against tournament teams and 0-3 vs. ranked teams. The Wildcats run the floor well and defend well, but are vulnerable to teams with good in and out ball movement. They go only six or seven players deep in most games.

Key players are Derrick Williams who is likely the best player on the floor. He averages 19.1 points per game and nearly 9.9 boards. The 6-8 sophomore is a force on the block and can hit from the outside. He shoots 57.4% from the field but is only 68.1% from the free throw line. Lamont James adds 9.6 points while guard Kyle Fogg chips in with 8.3 points and leads the team with 2.6 assists per game.

Memphis Tigers vs Arizona Wildcats Prediction

No one outside of Williams grabs more than five boards per game, and as a team Arizona does not pass well. Teams that rely on one player can be beaten by more balanced teams who can score from the outside. Guard play rules the NCAA and Memphis is primed to pull the upset. Watch the Tigers score last to move on while the Wildcats head home early.

We’re going with Memphis +5.5 -105 at Sportsbook.com. We can get +6 -110 at BetUS.com as well, but we don’t think they’ll need the 1/2 point.
