Yankees vs Red Sox April 8-10, 2011 – Series Preview
The Yankees vs. Red Sox is always a series to savor; even if it is in April. These two bitter rivals will meet 18 times in the 2011 MLB season, kicking off with this weekend’s home opening series at Fenway Park. Headed into the first game of the series, the Boston Red Sox are winless for the year (0-6), while the New York Yankees are 4-2. A positive record in April is important to any teams drive for the playoffs and both teams will be looking at this series as a measure of where they stand.
Here’s a look at the pitching match-ups and the three game series in depth.
Game 1 – Friday, April 8th. 2:05 pm ET
New York Yankees (Phil Hughes) vs. Boston Red Sox (John Lackey)
The Yankees need Hughes to become an ace-level pitcher this season. He got shelled for five runs in four innings his first outing; a 10-7 loss to the Detroit Tigers. John Lackey has been a disappointment since coming to Boston from the Angels last year via free agency. He needs to perform well especially at home and his first start was awful as he allowed nine runs in 3.2 innings in a loss to Texas.
Game 2 – Saturday, April 9th. 1:10 pm ET
New York Yankees (Ivan Nova) vs. Boston Red Sox (Clay Buchholz)
For the Boston Red Sox, Clay Buchholz is a key player and must return to form from his rookie season. Last year, he showed flashes of talent but was inconsistent. He has an 0-1 record with a 5.68 ERA in one start this season. Nova gave the New York Yankees a quality start against Minnesota with six innings and only three runs. Can he do the same at Fenway Park against a far more formidable lineup?
Game 3 – Sunday, April 10th. 8:05 pm ET
New York Yankees (CC Sabathia) vs. Boston Red Sox (Josh Beckett)
The Sunday night ESPN feature game with Sabathia vs. Beckett may become a classic. Sabathia has allowed only two earned runs in 13 innings despite not recording a win this season. Beckett gave up three runs in five innings taking a loss to the Indians in Cleveland. Beckett on the mound at Fenway Park is still one of the toughest pitchers in baseball.
Boston Red Sox
Boston is still trying to figure out its batting order with Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia to set the table for Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez, David Ortiz, and Kevin Youkalis. With this lineup, the Red Sox do have the hitters to rival the Yankees. Ortiz is starting well which is a good sign and Crawford got on base twice Wednesday night against the Indians. The Red Sox bats will hit and hit this season. Don’t count JD Drew as an easy out in this line-up either.
New York Yankees
The Yankees may have the best hitting line-up in baseball with Mark Texiera, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Jorge Posada, Nick Swisher and even Russell Martin who has a hot bat right now. Hitting can be contagious. The Yankees can all hit for power and average as well as clutch situations. The bench may be a question mark as might be left fielder Brett Gardner and center field Curtis Granderson. Yet, most teams in baseball would love to have the Yankees sixth or seventh hitters in the middle of their lineups.
The Red Sox closer is Jonathan Papelbon for now. He has been spotty at best and several candidates are itching to take his spot at the end of game. Set-up men Daniel Bard and Bobby Jenks are solid but not spectacular. The Yankees have Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera, and that might be all they need. If the starters can give New York six or seven, the Bombers look to close out most games with wins.
Yankees vs Red Sox Predictions
Nothing will soothe the nerves of Red Sox nation like a sweep of the hated Yankees this weekend, but with Lackey and Buchholz on the mound don’t expect to win the first two. Look for the Yankees to take two of three on the weekend beating Lackey on Friday and then Beckett on Sunday night. Boston is the bet on Saturday but not the rest of the weekend.
