2011 Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Preview

Pebble Beach Golf Links has been the site of some of the greatest tournaments ever. The main course has played host to the US Open and it’s fabled 18th fairway has seen the thrill of victory & agony of defeat and many times. Challenging Spyglass Hill offers the true test of courage in a player’s heart with its narrow fairways, treacherous greens and high risk / high reward opportunities. Under-rated and often overlooked Monterey Peninsula has been the catalyst and killer to many potential champions of the National Pro-Am in the past.

The fun begins on Tuesday but a celebrity highlight is the challenge starting on Wednesday at 11 am. A dozen big names including sportscaster Chris Berman, comic Bill Murray, actor Kevin Costner, and singer Michael Bolton among others vie for a purse of almost $30,000 to donate to charity and play five holes of golf.

The real golf starts on Thursday and cuts down to the low 60 players and top 25 teams for the final round on Sunday. The players play each of the courses once, with the final round on the famous Pebble Beach Golf Links on Sunday. Phil Mickelson is among the scheduled players but Tiger Woods is not, playing in the EPGA Omega Dubai Desert Classic instead. Perhaps the season’s hottest golfer, two-time winner Mark Wilson is slated to play, but Bill Haas, who’s been close in five tournaments to date will take a week off.

2011 Pebble Beach Pro Am Predictions

This is the type of tournament that can favor the grinder who can power through rough weather. Pebble Beach can be tamed like Tiger did in the 2000 US Open if conditions are ideal. But Pebble Beach can be a tiger itself if the wind is blowing off the Pacific. Names to watch on the leader board include Steve Elkington, Jim Furyk, Padraig Harrington, Chris DeMarco, John Daly and David Duval. Two other names to watch are Kevin Na and KJ Choi. Harrington has the ideal game for a bad weather Pebble Beach and Daly can light up the course if he is accurate. He has shown that tendency and played well to date. Duval is enjoying his best year in almost ten seasons so far.

Johnson has won the tournament in 2009 & 2010. Steve Lowrey took the title in 2008. The man to watch might be the most watched player in the field. Phil Mickelson has won twice here and loves the course. Watch out for Lefty this year at Pebble Beach. We’re going with Phil Mickelson at 8/1 at Sportsbook.com.
