2011 Farmers Insurance Open PGA Golf Preview

The 2011 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines begins Thursday, January 27th, and among the competitors scheduled to participate is Tiger Woods; his first tournament of the year. His chief rival Phil Mickelson is also scheduled to play in the PGA’s third tournament of the year. A total of 156 players will tee off at Torrey Pines, and Dan Crane is the defending champion.

Each player plays one round on the South and North courses on Thursday and Friday prior to the cut. The lowest 70 scores and ties will then take to the South course for Saturday and Sunday. Past champions include Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Davis Love III and Jose Maria Olazabal. The total purse is $5.8 Million.

The Torrey Pines layout includes both the North and South Courses each being par 72. The North Course is 6647 yards while the South Course is 7227 yards long. Shot making is at a premium on both courses but tee shots on the North course need to be accurate. Despite its shorter length, the north course will challenge the pros in the fairways as well as on the green. The South course has opportunities to go for the green, and long hitters can reap big rewards or eliminate themselves from contention.

Farmers Insurance is in its second year of sponsorship, having taken the title spot from Buick two years ago. This is the 59th year of a PGA Tour event in San Diego, and the 49th straight year the Century Club of San Diego has been the organizer.

Tiger Woods won four consecutive Buick Opens between 2005 – 2008. Nick Watney broke the run in 2009.

As a local boy born in San Diego, Phil Mickelson has to be considered a favorite at Torrey Pines. “Lefty” played well but didn’t content in Abu Dhabi last week (won by PGA Champion Martin Kayner) but could be poised to snag a win at his “home” course for the first time since 2001.

Ryan Palmer has had a strong start to the 2011 season winning in Hawaii and finishing fourth last week at the Bob Hope Classic. Bill Haas, Gary Woodland and Jhonattan Vegas tied for the Hope title with Vegas winning the playoff. Other players playing well so far include Matt Kuchar, Alex Cjeka, and Kevin Na. Woods is always Woods and you can expect him to be around for the weekend but it will take him some time to be in the final pairing.

2011 Farmers Insurance Open Prediction

Look for the young players to continue to dominate early in the season until the veterans catch up. Can another rookie grab a title, or will Woods, Mickelson or another seasoned pro take the title?

I’m going with a seasoned pro this time around, and I like Mickelson at 14/1 at Bodog.com. I like these odds for the home town boy.
