Flyers at Kings Game Preview

The Flyers were crushed on Monday, December 20th by Florida in their last game before the Christmas holiday break. A much needed rest did nothing for the Broad Streeters as they flew to Vancouver and were beaten by the Canucks in western Canada for the first time since 1989. The stunning facts were the scores of these two losses; first 5-0 to Florida and then 6-2 to Vancouver. The Flyers defense and goaltending was non-existent. Now they go to the Staples Center to face the 10th best offense in the NHL.

Philadelphia surrendered 49 shots to Vancouver (22 in the first period alone) leaving goaltenders Brian Boucher and Sergei Bobrovsky shaking their heads wondering where their teammates had gone. The two netminders had been steady so far this year, both sporting goals against averages under 2.50. Overall, the Flyers defense is ranked 6th in goals allowed and is 11th in penalty kill percentage.

Center Mike Richards leads the offense with 32 points, a total matched by Claude Giroux, while winger Danny Briere tops the goal scoring list with 17. Nikolay Zherdev has been strong recently witnessed by his two goal performance against the Rangers. Center Jeff Carter brings a nasty edge to his game as well as quick hands around the net accounting for 29 points on 14 goals and 15 assists. Scott Hartnell has 22 points giving Philly balanced scoring from multiple lines.

The L.A. Kings are second in the NHL in goals against average at 2.2 per game, and have the fourth best penalty kill in the league. While the Flyers have been cold, the Kings are hot, winning their last five in a row (prior to Wednesday’s loss against Phoenix). The wins have been impressive, with shutouts over Colorado and San Jose sandwiched around a 4-1 win over the Ducks of Anaheim, and a 3-2 shootout victory against Edmonton.

Goaltender’s Jonathan Quick (1.86 goals against with 18 wins) and Jonathan Bernier (2.78 goals against with four wins) have been excellent. The Kings defense has made their jobs easier this season, surrendering 30 shots or more just three times in their last ten contests.

The Kings blueline trio of Jack Johnson, Drew Doughty and Rob Scuderi lead the way with Johnson adding 24 points. Anze Kopitar is the top point getter with 38 while Dustin Brown has 33 points on 16 goals and 17 assists. Justin Williams has 31 points for the Kings.

So can the Flyers change their downward trend against the hot LA Kings? Not likely. Look for Los Angeles to get out early and cruise to a two goal victory.
