New Orleans Hornets vs Los Angeles Lakers NBA Preview

New Orleans Hornets

The New Orleans Hornets (42-31) are in seventh place in the NBA’s Western Conference, and sit right in the headlights of the Lakers if the first round of the playoffs began today. A win against their rival would help their push to overtake Portland for sixth place in the West, and a more favorable match-up with Dallas.

The game marks another homecoming for former Lakers player Trevor Ariza, who was a favorite among fans during their title run in 2008-09. Ariza is a defensive specialist but can also score (10.8 points per game) and shoots well from the outside. His play will be even more important pending the injury to power forward David West who left Thursday’s overtime win over the Jazz with a knee injury. West is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 18.9 points per night. His availability for Sunday is questionable.

Emeka Okafor won Thursday’s game for the Hornets with a buzzer beater. Okafor is scoring 10.5 points per game. Point guard Chris Paul has not elevated his team this year as much as anticipated. He is among the team leaders in points (16.4), assists (9.8) and steals (2.4), but New Orleans is only scoring 95.3 points a night, ranking them 26th in the NBA. Defensively, the Hornets are fourth in the NBA in points allowed.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers (52-20) have the best record in the NBA since the All-Star break, at 14-1. Kobe Bryant leads the team in scoring with 24.9 points per game and chips in 4.8 assists and 5.2 rebounds.

Andrew Bynum has elevated his play since the break and despite a two game suspension for a flagrant foul, is a key component to the Lakers run for a three-peat. He returned to action Friday night against the Clippers, with 16 points, 11 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals and a blocked shot for good measure. His inside presence combined with Pau Gasol gives the Lakers a formidable front line.

Gasol scores 18.8 points and grabs 10.2 rebounds per game. Add in 6’10” power forward Lamar Odom and the Lakers are again the favorite in the West, despite their likely second place finish. Derek Fisher and Ron Artest round out the starting five, while Shannon Brown and Steve Blake see their fair share of minutes off the bench.

Free Hornets vs Lakers Betting Pick

The Hornets need the win, but without West they’re missing a key offensive weapon. The Lakers have had a habit this season of falling asleep and taking teams lightly at home. They’ve lost eight home games this year, compared to seven last season. Every game is important now, and for the Hornets, a win in LA would be huge. I don’t think the Hornets will pull off the upset, but I think they’ll cover the spread.

On the money line, I’d take the Lakers all day long on this one. But, on the spread, I’m going with the Hornets +9 at BetUS.com.

The Hornets will have a tough time defending Bynum & Gasol in the middle, and Kobe Bryant on the outside all at the same time. This could be a very offensive game, so I’m taking the over at BetUS.com, at 187.5 -110.

The post below is from a previous matchup between the Hornets & Lakers. We’re keeping it posted for reference.

Revenge may be on the mind of Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets (21-15) as they meet the Los Angeles Lakers (25-11) on Friday night. The tip-off at 10:30 pm EST could start a rousing game as the Hornets try to wipe out memories of their 15 point blow out loss to the defending champions on December 29th. The Lakers seem to be a different team of late and anything is possible, including a New Orleans upset. Los Angeles is favored by 8 at the Sportsbook.com, where you can also get -105 because today is reduced juice Friday.

New Orleans Hornets vs Los Angeles Lakers Preview

New Orleans has seen improved play of late winning three of their last four games since the loss to LA. At 21-14 and third in the Southwest, the Hornets are a definite playoff team but have been unable to contend with elite; until last week. The Hornets followed a 15 point loss to LA with a two point win over Boston. Can you figure that out? Welcome to the NBA!

Boston was depleted without Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo which definitely helped the Hornets. Still, when Chris Paul is on the floor, good things happen for New Orleans. Paul is a team leader in points (16.9), assists (9.8) and steals (2.8) per game. He is versatile, quick and a nightmare to guard especially for aging Laker Derek Fisher. Even in the last game between the two teams, Fisher was no match. Paul had 20 points and seven assists while Fisher eight points and eight assists. Shannon Brown contributed six points in the last game but the big difference between the teams was Lamar Odom. He had 24 points off the bench and was a major match-up problem. Expect anything different at Staples Center on Friday?

The Hornets are the NBA’s 26th best team on offense and 4th best on defense. Odd, considering this team was originally built for run and gun. Emeka Okafor averages 9.6 boards and 1.8 blocks per game and power forward David West is the team scoring leader with 18.9 per game.

The Lakers get blown out by Memphis at home; then beat Detroit by 25 at home. Kobe Bryant’s is having his most inconsistent stretch in years and the formidable Los Angeles defense seems to play when it feels like it. Pau Gasol averages 18.7 points and 10.7 boards per game but is still soft inside. Andrew Bynum is still shaky coming off a knee injury and only gets 21 minutes a contest. Ron Artest and Steve Blake add little putting the burden mostly on Kobe and Lamar Odom. Can they keep up the pace without taking nights off?

Hornets vs Lakers Prediction for Jan. 6th, 2011

The Hornets are good. The Lakers are better. Look for LA to win, but a closer game than the sportsbooks are predicting. I’m taking the Hornets +8 (-105) at Sportsbook.com. It’s reduced juice Friday at Sportsbook.com, so whoever you bet on, you’ll get -105.
