Cardinals vs. Panthers Analysis & Prediction

The Carolina Panthers (2-14 last season) and Arizona Cardinals (5-11 last season) square off in week 1 of the 2011 NFL season. I doubt many fans are hyped up to watch these two teams, but I think it’s going to be a great game. Both of these teams struggled immensely last season and each will want to get out to a quick start this season. The Panthers and Cardinals played in week 15 last year, and the Panthers won 19-12 – for their second and final win of the season.

Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen will battle it out for the QB role in Carolina this season, and if neither of them clearly stand out as the deserving starter, they could struggle once again. Defenses will be able to focus on Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams again in 2011, unless one of the young QB’s can take the reigns and start performing at a consistent level.

The Arizona Cardinals signed former Philadelphia Eagles backup QB Kevin Kolb during the off-season, and everyone is wondering if he’ll be enough to turn the franchise around. The one thing everyone agrees on is that Larry Fitzgerald will be a common and potent target.

Carolina Panthers vs. Arizona Cardinals Point Spread

At the BetOnline Sportsbook, the Arizona Cardinals are favored by -7 (-110) on the point spread. Of course the Panthers are the dogs, at +7 (-110) on the spread.

Arizona is favored by a TD right now, which is a lot for a team that went 5-11 last season – even if they’re playing a 2-14 team. Kolb is finally being given a chance to be a starting QB in the NFL, and I think he gives the Cardinals 3-4 more wins than they had last year. Larry Fitzgerald will have a better season than last year as well, with TE Todd Heap helping to distract defenses and create space for him.

The Carolina Panthers actually had a decent defense last season, but the offense couldn’t score. Cam Newton should add some spark to the offense, along with the additions of Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olsen. The two veterans TE’s will be big targets for the young QB, and they should also help Steve Smith get more 1-on-1 coverage downfield. Both teams will have a new starting QB in this game and I’m going to have to take the home favorite. With more NFL experience, Kolb has a better chance at success than Newton in week 1.

I’m giving up the points and betting on the Arizona Cardinals at -7 (-110) at BetOnline.com. I hate giving up exactly 7, so I’ll buy 1/2 point to avoid a potential push.

Cardinals vs. Panthers Money Line

The Arizona Cardinals money line is currently -330, while the latest Panthers money line is +275 at the BetOnline Sportsbook.

While I expect the Cardinals to cover the spread, I wouldn’t be shocked if we see Newton on Sportscenter rushing for a couple of TD’s and passing for a couple as well. An upset could happen here, but it’s hard to predict since this is Newton’s first regular season NFL game. As I mentioned above, I think Kolb’s experience will prevail by at least 7 points, but I wouldn’t fault anyone for taking +275 on the Panthers money line. +275 might be enough value to make it worth rolling the dice on Cam Newton.

Panthers vs. Cardinals Total (Over/Under) Betting Odds

Right now, the Panthers vs. Cardinals over/under is 36.5 (-110 on either side) at the BetOnline Sportsbook.

I prefer the over in this game, as both teams are going to want to showcase their new offenses. I’m betting on the game to go over 40 points and easily surpass the posted total at BetOnline right now. If we find out some time before game time that Jimmie Clausen is going to start over Cam Newton (unlikely), then I’ll have to rehash my thoughts on the over/under. Clausen is not as potent as Newton, and that could be the difference.

Bet on Carolina Panthers vs. Arizona Cardinals

I don’t expect the Panthers to start well in the 2011 season. There are unanswered question at the QB position, and they’re going to have trouble outscoring most teams in the NFL. Kolb wants to prove he deserves the starting job, and I think he puts up big numbers while cruising to an ATS win. I’m betting on the Cardinals to cover the 7 point spread, and I’m also betting the over of 36.5 points (-110).
