Daytona 500 Favorite Picks

The content below was written for the 2011 Daytona 500. When we get a bit closer to the 2013 Daytona 500, we’ll update this post with our latest predictions.

Winless in the last two Sprint Cup seasons, I have a hard time justifying a bet on Dale Earnhardt Jr., even at 9/1. Until he shows us he can finish at the top of the podium again, a bet on him feels more like ‘gambling’ than anything else. Yeah, he’s on the pole, but that doesn’t mean a thing. Since 2001, one Daytona 500 winner came from the 3rd spot, one from 4th, and the rest came from starting spots in the 7th – 39th spots. Since 1988, only 2 winners have come from the pole position.

I like 3-time Daytona 500 champion Jeff Gordon from the #2 spot. At 10/1 at the Bodog Sportsbook, I’ve already dropped my first bet. The rest of the starting positions are yet to be nailed down, but I have some others I’m already thinking about.

It’s hard to pass up 14/1 on Jimmie Johnson (Bodog Sportsbook), who’s been running decent so far in practice, and you have to expect his team to get dialed in before race day. I also like Kyle Busch, at 9/1 at Bodog.com.

2011 Daytona 500 ‘Top 3’ Bets

At Sportsbook.com, you can bet on drivers finishing in the top 3. I love these bets because the odds are still very good, but you have a much better chance of winning. Here are the Top 3 odds as of Monday, Feb. 14th at 9:30 pm EST. For the latest Top 3 lines, go to Sportsbook.com, then click on Auto>Daytona 500 Top 3 Finish.

Top 3 Finishing Odds

  • Dale Earnhardt Jr.: 9/5
  • Kevin Harvick: 2/1
  • Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch: 12/5
  • Tony Stewart: 3/1
  • Jimmie Johnson, Jamie McMurray: 7/2
  • Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton, Clint Bowyer, Kurt Busch: 9/2
  • Joey Logano, Carl Edwards: 6/1
  • Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya: 15/2
  • Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth: 9/1
  • Brian Vickers, David Reutimann: 10/1
  • Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski: 12/1
  • David Ragan, AJ Allmendinger: 15/1
  • Paul Menard: 18/1
  • Bobby Labonte, Marcos Ambrose, Regan Smith: 30/1

My favorite bets here are Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon at 12/5, and Carl Edwards at 6/1. I also like Jimmie Johnson at 7/2, and Matt Kenseth with an outside shot at 9/1.

Jeff Gordon knows how to win at Daytona, his Chevy is fast, and so are his Hendrick teammates. Barring a crash or major mechanical failure, a top 3 finish looks very realistic. This can be said about both of his teammates as well. Gordon has 3 Daytona wins so far (’97, ’99, ’05), and Earnhardt Jr & Johnson both have wins here too. This could be a great day for Hendrick Motorsports.

Kyle Busch is an animal who can win from any starting position. He’s had some tough finishes at Daytona, and nobody in the lineup will want this more than him.

Sportsbook.com Speed Row Bets for the Daytona 500

Sportsbook is also running Speed Row bets for the 2011 Daytona 500. If you’re not familiar with Speed Row bets, these are bets where you choose between 5 predetermined drivers, and decide who will finish highest in the race. Right now, Sportsbook is running 3 Speed Row bets. They are:

Speed Row 1

  • Carl Edwards: 17/5
  • Clint Bowyer: 16/5
  • Denny Hamlin: 16/5
  • Jimmie Johnson: 3/1
  • Kurt Busch: 16/5

Speed Row 2

  • Greg Biffle: 13/4
  • Jeff Burton: 14/5
  • Joey Logano: 3/1
  • Juan Pablo Montoya: 13/4
  • Mark Martin: 17/5

Speed Row 3

  • Brian Vickers: 16/5
  • David Reutimann: 16/5
  • Martin Truex Jr: 13/4
  • Matt Kenseth: 3/1
  • Ryan Newman: 3/1

For Speed Row 1 I like Jimmie Johnson. For Speed Row 2 I like Jeff Burton. For Speed Row 3 I’m going with Matt Kenseth, but this one seems like a pick’em. I can see that group finishing in any order.
