Hawks vs Spurs Betting Line

Fresh off a huge road win in Orlando and the destruction of the Nets at home, the Atlanta Hawks (15-8) head to Texas to wrangle with the San Antonio Spurs (18-3). Wow, that was the gheyest sentence I’ve ever typed. Hey, you don’t get many opportunities to use the word ‘wrangle’, so you take ’em when you can. Anyway, game time for this huge matchup is Friday at 8:30 pm at the AT&T Center where the Spurs are favored by 8 at Sportsbook.com. The over/under is 196.

Hawks @ Spurs Game Preview

Owners of the best record in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs have won their last three games, including a 25 point rout of the New Orleans Hornets on Sunday. They’ve won eight of their last 10 games, only marred by a bad road loss against the LA Clippers. Tim Duncan leads the club with 9.2 boards per game, to go along with 13.7 PPG. Manu Ginobili has had a great start to the 2010-2011 season, averaging 20.1 PPG and 5.1 assists. Tony Parker averages 7.1 assists and 17 points a game. Forward Richard Jefferson is having a great season, adding another 14.6 points and four boards per game.

The Spurs bench is one of the deepest in the league, with help from George Hill, Matt Bonner, DeJuan Blair, Antonio McDyess, James Anderson, and others.

The Spurs are a very versatile team that can beat you in different ways. They’re great at making in-game adjustments, making it hard on opponents to find a rhythm. What worked in the first quarter likely won’t work in the second. If someone is getting beat, they know how to get the ball into the right hands and find open players. With so many weapons, opponents are generally making adjustments to the Spurs, while the Spurs make adjustments to win the game. The way the Spurs are playing right now is reminiscent of 2007 when they took down their last NBA title.

The Hawks large physical presence can pose problems for even the better teams in the league, as Orlando found out last week. Josh Powell, Al Horford and Zaza Pachulia work the inside well and rotate to stay fresh while Josh Smith at power forward is averaging 2.3 blocks per game. Overall, the Hawks block almost five shots a game and rip down 40 boards.

Atlanta’s three point prowess at 6 per game also killed the Magic. Joe Johnson, Mike Bibby and Jamal Crawford are the biggest threats behind the arc with Bibby connecting almost 55% of the time. The Hawks have won seven of their last eight, including a 15 point win over New Jersey Tuesday night. Versatility has been a key during the latest run. Atlanta has won with offense outscoring Memphis 112-109 and defense defeating the Magic 80-74.

Atlanta Hawks vs San Antonio Spurs Free Pick

The Hawks inside trio may wear down Duncan in the paint but the Spurs veteran will still get his points. A hot night from Ginobili and San Antonio is nearly unbeatable. They have only lost once this year when he’s gone off for 30 points or more. Look for the Spurs to get out fast and hold off Atlanta’s late threes. This one will be close, and I don’t think the Spurs will cover the 8 point spread. So, I’m going with the Hawks +8.
