The New Orleans Saints (10-4) play the Atlanta Falcons (12-2) on Monday Night Football in a game with huge playoff implications. If the Falcons win the game they’ll be able to lock up 1st place in the NFC South, an automatic bye, and home field advantage in the playoffs. New Orleans is currently in 2nd place in the division and can clinch a playoff birth with a win (or a loss by Tampa Bay). This should be one of the best regular season games of the 2010-2011 NFL season.

New Orleans Saints @ Atlanta Falcons MNF Analysis

Atlanta is 1 of only 3 teams in the NFL with a perfect record at home this season. The Falcons have been playing very good on offense and with the Saints issues on defense right now, Matt Ryan will try to expose their secondary. New Orleans has given up 27+ points per game in 3 of the last 4 games they’ve played. The only exception was in week 14 when they were able to keep St. Louis to 13 points. Atlanta has been averaging 26.4 PPG on the season, which is 5th best in the NFL.

Drew Brees and the high flying Saints offense have been averaging 25.3 points per game. Atlanta’s defense has been struggling with the passing game this season, giving up 226.8 YPG, which is 20th in the league. Obviously the Saints will be looking to expose this weakness in the Falcons defense.

The Saints & Falcons are close on defense, with both teams ranked in the top 10 for giving up the fewest PPG. The Saints defense struggles with the rushing game, giving up 117 rushing YPG – 20th in the league. The Falcons are averaging 122.6 rushing YPG, good for 7th in the NFL. The Falcons will look to get their ground game established, and use it to eat up time.

The Saints have one of the best passing offenses in the NFL and there’s no doubt that Brees will get a couple TD’s on MNF, but I think the Falcons can win the game with their rushing game. Michael Turner (1,256 yds, 4.2 YPC, 11 TD’s) has had a great season and he should be able to control the clock at home. If Turner can rush for over 100 rushing yards, the Falcons will likely win the TOP, giving Brees fewer chances to beat them.

The last time these two teams met, the Saints won the game in Atlanta, but the Falcons were playing without ‘Matty Ice’ and Michael Turner. With the two most important players on the team playing this Monday, I expect the Falcons to show the Saints they own the NFC this year. Not only can the Falcons can lock up home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but it’s also a huge confidence booster for them.

Monday Night Football – Saints at Falcons Free Prediction

Atlanta doesn’t lose at home with Matt Ryan leading the charge, and I can’t bet against them on MNF under the national spotlight. This is one of the biggest games for the Falcons in years, and they should be prepared for this game. I’ll take the Falcons -2.5 to cover on Monday.
